Haiku

It has been a long time that I've not been posting regularly, putting up new silly poems on this blog. I haven't stopped writing poetry, though, of course. In fact, it's probably because I've been taking my writing so much more seriously that I don't spend much time posting here.

One of my recent writing projects, about which I posted here earlier, included using 30 of my haiku on a series of collectible lamps. It was fun working on the project with decollection in Shanghai, and the lamps are very nice. I've also written a little follow up article, The Ingredients of Good Haiku, over at HubPages. Christian Fiction Book Reviews

I am attempting to build a website with Christian fiction book reviews. The site sorts of titles, whether they be books marketed specifically as Christian fiction, or books that seem like things Christian readers might be interested in. I'm hoping to have all kinds of books, old or new, and really aim to have a breadth of titles, authors, and genres available.

I have been posting reviews of my own, and will continue to do so. At the same time, I would like for other readers to send reviews for inclusion on the website too. It doesn't matter whether the reviewer is a Christian either. I am open to reviews from all readers, but the reviews need to keep in mind that most the people reading the reviews will be Christians, and so should be written with that readership in mind.

If you want to help out, you can review books that are already displayed on the site, because I do want reviews of the same book from different readers. But if you prefer, you can send a review of a book not yet listed there, as I also want to increase the number of titles I've got displayed on the site. I want to see the site expand, with lots of new novels being covered, and lots of new reviewers joining in.

a commissioned job

A friend of mine asked me to write a poem for the graduation at the preschool and kindergarten that she heads up. The students will read this aloud at the graduation ceremony later this year.

for Shanghai Singapore International School

The first day of school
I shook with fear
Would you blame me
if I dropped a tear?
But when my teacher
chased my fears away
I began to grow
and learn every day

In my class I made
many new friends
And now I am sad
when the school day ends
With great friends and
teachers by my side
I wear each day
a smile too big to hide

Today into the world
I am stepping out
No longer filled
with fear and doubt

Travel Blog

I am migrating my travel blog to a site called Peregrine Online. I know, ironic, huh? Well, it seemed like the thing to do, putting it on its own domain.

I will be writing about the same sorts of things I always have, travel around Singapore, China, and other parts of Asia, as well as other spots I've been around the globe.

I'm adding in another section to the blog, which is more on life in Singapore and Shanghai, especially with tips for foreigners staying in one place or the other (I split my time between the two, though I was brought up in the US).

fired at an odd time

I am not surprised that these two men are out of work, seeing how the season has gone for the Houston Astros. I am quite surprised that it happened now, with just over 30 games left in the baseball season this year.

Moreover, I think it is a pity Purpura's plans aren't being given much time to come to fruition. I don't think he has made any huge blockbuster deals, at least not any that have gone as he would have liked, but I do think he looked like he had a plan in mind, which was to build around a solid core of players he has locked up for the Astros. I don't think the team is one big player away from success, but rather a few role players away. I thought that this made the trade for Wiggington at the deadline not all that bad. With a 2nd baseman of the same caliber, and a center fielder of that caliber, and a catcher for next year, I think the 'Stros would be in good shape. I would, of course, rather those 3 positions focus on defense, and provide adequate offense. With Lee and Pence taking the corner outfield positions, and Berkman at first, the club has its major offensive players in place. With steady production from Wiggington and at least average production from 2B, C, and CF, then we'd be doing fine. Wiggington's average defense is covered by Everrett's way-better-than-average defense (though below average offense). Seems to me that Purpura was going after precisely this strategy, looking to address those needs in the offseason. I am not so sure what the new guy, whoever he is, will do. If plans proceed according to this model, then I think we'll be in good shape.

Oh, one move I'd hope we'd make is to sign Loretta to play 2B, and trade Burke. He hasn't impressed me so far.

A friend just pointed me to some new poetry that I think you will love, written by Lisa Hurley Downer. The two new poems are entitled No Disguise and I Believe.

Downer is a performing artist, and her music training really shows through in both of these poems. They've got such a soulful voice, so mellow. I can just hear the music behind the verse.

Washing Machines

When buying big household appliances, I always take a long time to decide what I want. Maytag Washing Machines have their benefits, but then General Electric washers have some good points too, and Whirlpool has its own strengths.

Having all those choices staring at me can be great, but it can also be a bit daunting, really. How am I supposed to choose which is the best for me?

One of the things that often works best is to look online. Like most buyers, I will probably end up buying at one of the local shops, but I like to do my research online.

Krillion's search engine offers a great database of household appliances. Not only can you get extensive brand and model information, but you can also find local shops that carry the models you are looking for. That's an excellent service, and it makes the whole process easier.

Spotlighting: Our Beginnings (at least in blog)

I've been spotlighting my blogging pal, silken, on this blog lately. But let me take you back to where it all began for silken and me... well, sort of where it all began.

Silken used to blog with me under another name, skouba, at a site called Writing Up. She learned the ins and outs of blogging there, like I did. And she really maintained a fantastic blog there.

Sadly, the site is more or less defunct now (though you can find it popping up every now and then). I miss the place there and the fun conversations we used to have. I am glad, though, skouba/silken (or is it silken/skouba? this always confuses me...) is now blogging elsewhere. It would be sad to lose her insights in an online setting. Interacting with her at the site is what I most miss about losing it.

I am, though, one of the lucky ones. I know skouba/silken in real life, and have known her all my life. So, for me, at least I won't lose touch with her, even if the whole internet falls apart!

Spotlight: Silken at Communati

I am continuing to make my way through some great blogs, writing a short entry introducing each of the blogs of one of my blogging friends, silken. Her newest one (at least, the newest to my knowledge... but she could have started another without telling me) is at a new site called communati, which is a community-style blogging site. I like how silken's personality really comes out in this casual setting, where commenting is as important as posting. I haven't gotten into that site yet as much as I would like, due to a busy schedule since the site opened. That means I haven't gotten to read all of silken's entriesat the new site -- not yet -- but I have enjoyed the ones I've read.

Take a look at this post on reading keys, where she shares some ideas about a tool she plans to use as she starts homeschooling her 2 young nephews. I like how she shares there about her own philosophy of focusing on phonics rather than sight words. It's the sort of discussion she often posts there, and is great for anyone who teaches kids (whether parents or teachers).

Spotlight: Each New Day

Silken, the bloggign buddy I am presently spotlighting here, keeps another very high quality blog at blog.com, Each New Day. I love the optimism and sense of hope reflected in that title. It keeps showing up throughout the blog's entries too.

Like what you see in her other blogs, silken here shares little tidbits of things she finds here and there. I like her post on the Schlitterbahn in Galveston. Her enthusiasm for the fun one can find in life is shown up in this post. She's not going to be scared off by long lines at a summer outing. Instead, she focuses on the fun her family has when they all go out together.

The whole site is pretty much like that, and it makes for a really pleasant read. And, on top of that, you'll probably find out about a lot of things you never heard of before. That's one of the best parts about all of silken's blogs. She has a curious mind, and a willingness to share the things she's picked up here and there. That makes for good reading.

Spotlight: Sowing Seeds

I am continuing to show off the good work of my blogging friend, silken, and I have reached one of my favorites of her blogs. It's not at blogspot, but at a different blog site (blog.com), and I like how she's kept this one very thematic. She calls this blog Sowing Seeds, and she focuses on raising kids, using the growth of a plant or seed as the metaphor that shapes the paradigm she is focusing.

One of her recent entries, Mutation is a great example of what I like about this blog. Look at the insights that grow up out of the simple definition offered when she applies it to teenage kids. It's simple, and that's where the beauty of this blog lies. With just a little kernel of a thought, silken is able to bring about a flowering beauty for us to gaze at and admire.

A lot of times at this blog I will learn of phrases I hadn't heard of before, not being much of a gardener myself, like dethatching. It's great how silken is able to define terms like this and make them understandable, and then apply them to her role as a parent.

I really love the approach she has taken here. This is, in my estimation, just the right way to cultivate a blog.

Spotlight: Rhyme Time

I am continuing to turn the spotlight on my blogging buddy, silken, and the great work she does in keeping up her little blogging kingdom that she has built up. I've reached one of her spaces where she seems to just be having a good time. At her Rhyme Time, she enters cute rhymes, and they are often very entertaining. I find myself getting a little laugh out of them all the time.

I keep 3 different blogs filled with rhymed poetry myself (like this one), as well as another full of acrostics, so I know that maintaining a fun, lighthearted poetry blog is not as easy as it sounds. But silken does it very well. Whether writing about Fish Camp or about rainy days, you can see that silken is having a good time doing it.

Spotlight: Family Night

I am still spotlighting one of my favorite bloggers, silken. She keeps lots of useful and interesting blogs. One of the really nice resources she has is Family Night, where she shares lots of great ideas for things that the whole family can do together. I think you will like the fun ideas she has put together there.

Just look at this entry on treasure hunts. She includes some great photos there, and gives a good explanation of the activity she writes about. This is not something just thrown together. Rather, you can tell it comes from a parent who has lots of ideas and is eager to share them. Her quality of writing is of the highest, and I think you will enjoy the activities you see listed there.

The family fun runs sound like lots of fun to me. And take a look at what she says about letterboxing. Doesn't that sound like a great time? Check out silken's family night blog, and you'll find loads of ideas like that.

Browsing through this blog, one thing you'll figure out really quickly is that silken's family is a tight-knit bunch, and they like being together. That's great. I think this blog gives us some of the secrets as to how they have achieved this.

Spotlight: Kidbits

As I continue highlighting the work of one of my favorite bloggers, silken, I've come to one of the most fun blogs you'll find. This might seem a little familiar, if you've been reading my other spotlights on silken. Silken's daughter keeps this one (like the one her brother keeps), and it is called kidbits. If you've read the mother's blogs, I think you will see lots of the mother in the daughter's work too.

A lot (but not all) of the entries are in 10-point format (like one of her mom's blogs), and all have interesting ideas and info (again, like at mom's blogs). I enjoyed reading what the girl had learned about 9/11 and the World Trade Center, and equally enjoyed her list of ideas for Mother's Day.

This blog, like her big brother's, is apparently on holiday at the moment. With the school year picking up and the kids being back to work (does that mean they remember how to read and write again???), I suspect it will pick up. At any rate, I do hope it will pick back up. I miss her posts!

Florida Villa

Travel to Florida during any holiday period that the family has can be a real ball. One of the best family holidays we ever took was when we all went to Florida during the month of September some years back. It was great -- perfect weather, smaller crowds than usual, and lots and lots of fun at Disney World, Epcot Center, Universal Studios, and all of the other great attractions in the area.

A lot of people think it is a big hassle to find good accommodations when traveling to a destination like Orlando. The fear is that you'll get stuck with something that is either a lousy place to stay, in a bad location, or outrageously priced. That doesn't have to be the case though.

For me, I think a Florida Villa is the perfect choice. The accommodations are comfortable and affordable, and there is something there to entertain every member of the family. You can really spread out and make yourself comfortable. It can have a real homey feeling, so you won't feel as exhausted as you would if you were to choose some cramped little hotel room.

Make your trip to Florida the best it can be. Choose accommodations that will let you be comfortable and really enjoy the surrounding fun.

Spotlight: Places to Go

Continuing the spotlight on my blogging friend, silken, I'd like to turn to her blog called Places to Go. This is a unique sort of travel blog because silken doesn't just talk about places she's been, but also about places she hasn't been, but would like to go. I think that's pretty clever, really!

Just look here what she says about Vienna, or here about Avebury. You'll find out about all sorts of places when you read through this blog. I mean, I never even heard of the Museum of Hoaxes till I read about it on her blog.

Here, you can also find out about movies that talk about specific places, like what you see in her entry on an arctic tale. (I think there's a theme emerging -- icebergs????)

Silken has a curious mind, one that would like to see and know more about this big world. In this blog, that really shines through.

Appraisal360

It's always hard to break out of one's own viewpoints and take a look at a thing from another angle. But sometimes it is really just so necessary to do so. It is never more needful than when we are dealing with other people, particularly those for whom we are in some way responsible. Any supervisor or manager can attest to how difficult it can be to give an objective evaluation of an employee, but that is one of the times when a broader perspective is most helpful.

That's what impresses me about 360 degree feedback. It is a management tool that allows employers to move away from tunnel vision when evaluating their employees. Here's how it works:
• allow the employee being evaluated to fill up a questionaire regarding his or her performance
• give the same questionaire to 5 other workers close to the employee in question, preferably in differing relationships to him or her (a supervisor, a subordinate, a team member, etc.)
• using the various feedback forms collected, Appraisal360's system will help you generate a collated report that gives a well-rounded view of the employee

This is a very valuable resource for HR departments, managers, supervisors... anyone who needs to evaluate other workers. Many personal coaches are likewise finding a useful resource in Appraisal360. Spotlight: You Know...?

There's a blogger I'd like to turn a spotlight on for a little while. Her name is silken, and she keeps a number of blogs. I'm going to highlight all of them here over the next few post... at least all of them that I know of.

One of the fun ones she keeps is called Did You Know? In this blog, you can find all sorts of little tidbits of information. She comes up with all sorts of clever little things.

Take this one: Did You Know What it Takes to be a Perfumer? Or did you know that avacado oil is a good moisturizer? That might not be something I would've ever asked, nor particularly wondered about. But when she raises these things in her blog, I do find them interesting, and it gets my curiosity going.

Orlando is one travel spot
That year after year is really hot
And I know why this is always so:
There's fun everywhere in Orlando

When you make your own way there
You'll make many memories to share
With the folks who you left back home

Amusement parks are all the rage

Superbad

Superbad is taking over YouTube.

That's right, Superbad Clips will be putting up 5 videos at You Tube that you won't want to miss.

The trailers look pretty fun -- one of those feel good summer shows. I was laughing even at the short clips that I found there at YouTube.

The "McLovin" sequence looks like it is really hilarious. If that is the norm for the show, then I think it will provide plenty of laughs before we all drag ourselves back to school.

I love how you can watch movie trailers at You Tube. It's a great spot to go and see what's on at the cinema. I might have missed Superbad if I hadn't seen the clips there (I am not exactly the target audience for the show), but it looks like it could be really funny. The opening clip with the mom treating her son and his friend like they're little kids was the sort that I know would have felt especially resonant the summer before I went off to school -- and probably all through my high school days too.

And of course, this is the nerd's show of all nerd's shows, from the look of it. This is from the guys who brought you 40 Year Old Virgin, so that probably says it.

Please do take note that you have to be 18 to view the movie. It will be in theaters on August 17.

While you are at You Tube, do stop in and visit my videos there too. It's kind of funny to observe which of my videos has gotten the most views -- I've had to delete tons of spam from the perverts there.

Adult Education

I have been involved in adult education for some years, teaching undergraduate students at a private university. Not knowing why or how it's been locked
I can get into the dashboard and look around
But from there the hardships do abound
I can't post, I can't read, I can't figure it out
I don't know what all of the trouble is about
Sigh... when this happens, I really hate it
It makes me so angry that I could spit
I can't find from whence the trouble stems
I really am, right now, at my wits' ends
I'm just glad that here I can still log in

A Sad Case

Note: At my main blog, I have done poetry challenges off and on. The first poetry challenge involved making rhymed poems using the end words assigned by other bloggers. I've talked elsewhere about some of the benefits that grew out of this exercise. I liked doing that so much that this whole blog grew out of it, though I choose my own end words now.

(Incidentally, I like using assinged words better -- it forces flexibility. If you'd like, you are free to participate in this -- just leave a word list -- preferably rhyming words -- in a comment, and I'll make a poem of it, using your list as end words. If you leave me a link to your blog, I'll post the link with the words you assign to me.)

The following rhyme was originally posted in that poetry challenge. I am afraid that site is falling apart, so I am reposting the entries over here.

Hawaii

On a holiday to New Zealand a couple of years ago, I found that the most affordable way to travel was to stay in a rental apartment. Not only that, but it was much more comfortable than a conventional hotel setting too. It was especially good because we had 2 little ones with us, and one elderly person (no... not me).

Hawaii Vacation Rentals would be just the ideal thing to make a holiday to that sunny set of islands just as comfortable as my trip to New Zealand was. It makes me wish I thought of that when I was in Hawaii. I had pretty lousy accommodations that time, and I can tell you this -- paradise doesn't seem like paradise without a good room. I know that seems like some simple and obvious advice, but I really couldn't overstate how imporant having a good place to stay is in order to have a good vacation. Even in Hawaii.
